A FIDELITY ANALYSIS TOOL FOR F-35
JOINT STRIKE
FIGHTER TRAINING SYSTEMS
The United States Navy, Air Force,
Marine Corps, and United Kingdom, in concert with prime contractor Lockheed
Martin, are currently
defining training requirements for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) using the
Instructional System Design (ISD) Process. The JSF presents many aircrew and
maintenance training challenges due to its new or unique systems, and
multiple Service variants. The Integrated Product Team defining the training
system specifically needs innovative procedures and software tools to aid in
the selection of the most appropriate levels of training fidelity.
On 26 May 2004 VSAT was awarded a
Phase I SBIR contract for development of a process to define and prioritize
fidelity requirements for integration into performance specifications. This
process, aided by a reusable database, will provide the optimum fidelity
requirements by task and training device, considering cost, training
objectives, and mission impacts. This semi-automated process will maximize
consistency and minimize workload while using key operational and technical
inputs to provide explicit descriptions of how fidelity requirements are
defined, verified, and prioritized.
VSAT’s approach will enable a
consistent definition of fidelity requirements across the different JSF
variants, ensuring that the requirements are clearly understood by all
parties. The process for determining "F35 Training Systems Fidelity" requirements will be analyzed for potential automation,
and developed for maximum re-use in future military and commercial training
device acquisitions.”
