VISUAL CUE ANALYSIS
|
VSAT can describe your visual
system requirements in operational terms. In the past, visual requirements have been
characterized in purely engineering terms. Generally, this has not produced systems that
met operational training requirements. Attempts to convey fighter, transport and other
aircraft visual out-the-window requirements from the pilots perspective to the
acquisition community, development contractor, and finally to the design engineers has
proven to be a daunting task.
A "visual cue
analysis" describes each flight task and its visual cues and references together with
descriptions of how the visual cues and references are used during the performance of the
flight tasks. VSAT personnel developed a method for collecting such data for combat
training tasks. Such a database describes all of the associated tasks in pilot terms
together with detailed out-the-window visual cue descriptions. These descriptions document
the ranges at which a visual cue is identified, significant characteristics of the cue,
cue size, and how visual cues used to perform a task. VSAT can also provide the link
between operational and engineering requirements.
